Tools for treating large pores, wrinkles, sagging skin, stretch marks, and more.
Problem: Dull skin and large pores
Pro solution: The Clear and Brilliant Permea laser treatment gently evens and brightens the overall tone of the skin's surface while stimulating collagen production that can make pores appear smaller over time. “The laser treatment takes 20 minutes, and the resulting mild redness disappears in less than a day,” says Anne Chapas, MD, medical director of Union Square Laser Dermatology. And while three to six monthly treatments are needed for the best results, a visible difference will be seen after only one or two sessions.
Problem: Wrinkles
Pro solution: “The go-to treatment for wrinkles and fine lines is still Botox, which can’t be beat for effectiveness,” says Jeanine Downie, MD, a dermatologist in Montclair, New Jersey. Botox (the brand name for botulinum toxin injections) blocks the nerves' signals to muscles to contract, which forces wrinkles to relax. Results are immediate, though they may take up to a week to show completely, and the effects last for several months.
Problem: Turkey neck
Pro solution: Ultherapy is the first FDA-approved procedure for noninvasive neck tightening. “[Ultrasound] stimulates collagen generation and tightens the connective tissue at a deeper level than other treatments on the market,” says Dr. Chapas, who adds that the procedure effectively smooths the neck and tightens the jawline. Preliminary studies have also shown positive results in the arms and knees.
Problem: Sagging skin
Pro solution: Fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane literally “fill in” sagging areas like the cheeks and eye hollows, adding volume for a more plumped, youthful look. “Fillers last at least six months on average,” says Dr. Downie, “though many times I’ve seen them last under the eyes for up to a year.”
Problem: Brown spots, excessive pigmentation, and stretch marks
Pro solution: The Fraxel Restore erbium laser produces a controlled “burn” that stimulates skin to repair itself naturally with new collagen and healthy skin cells. The laser is effective at improving skin problems including excessive pigmentation, stretch marks, and pitted acne scars. “It’s quite expensive and takes several treatments,” says Downie, “but it works very well.”
Problem: Broken blood vessels, veins, and rosacea
Pro solution: The Excel V laser’s light is absorbed by damaged blood vessels in the skin, which are then eliminated; normal skin tone and color replace the discoloration. “The Excel V works much faster than any other laser of its kind on the market,” says Downie, “and it typically takes two to three treatment sessions to achieve desired results.”
